Lynn Rodden is a pet therapist in Colorado whose dog Lily, a Great Dane/Lab mix, was cruelly abused for three years. She sent us this about kids and dogs:
According to DogBiteLaw.com, "1,000 Americans per day are treated in emergency rooms as a result of dog bites. Most of the victims who receive medical attention are children, half of whom are bitten in the face."
The fact is that even a dog who has never shown any aggressive tendencies can be startled into harming a child who runs up wanting to "Pet the doggie!"
It's horrible enough to contemplate serious injury to the child, but the dog owner can be held liable for even a nip. In many states, the dog can be put down!
My dog is sweet and loving, but she's terribly frightened by people approaching her suddenly. The CautionWalker gives us an added bit of protection that could make all the difference. It reminds parents not to let their kids approach my dog without permission. It also alerts strangers not to lean down to give her a pat without asking.
All legal responsibility rests with you, the pet owner. I say, give yourself that added bit of protection. If it saves one child or one dog (yours), it will be worth it!
